2005 Words
Much has been written on the subject of e-government over the last three years; how it will help to provide better services for citizens and businesses and drive more effective use of public information resources.
Much less has been delivered.
The e-government mission is to ensure that the UK derives maximum benefit from the knowledge economy. The underlying objectives are clear and simple; including making all government services available electronically by 2005. Unfortunately, this particular objective will almost certainly not be achieved. Half way to the deadline and less than half of the organizations questioned in the latest Socitm survey were on track to hit the 2005 target.
Whilst millions of e-government words have been written describing objectives and how important it is to achieve them, very few have been written about execution. And almost none have been written in a brief, consumable form which can be read by a busy manager, executive or elected member.
We have prepared a briefing which is not about strategy, concepts, policy or environment; the UK already has some of the best in the world. This briefing is about delivery and making things happen, because this is where organizations are failing to deliver on objectives and hit targets.
Our words are not definitive or complete. They are certainly not official or even authoritative. But they are pragmatic and based on experience and real successes and failures in the public and private sector. Hopefully they are relevant and useful.
And there are only 2005 of them.
